Silvio Berlusconi, iconic Italian leader, passes away at 86
Rome, June 12 (EFE) – Silvio Berlusconi, the former Prime Minister of Italy, has died at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan due to leukemia, according to reports from the media on Monday.
Berlusconi, aged 86, was admitted to the hospital on Friday for a series of scheduled medical check-ups.
While there is no official confirmation at the moment, Italian media outlets said Berlusconi passed away on Monday morning, shortly after his five children and his brother Paolo arrived at the hospital.
Berlusconi’s eldest daughter, Marina, and Paolo were the first to arrive at the medical facility around 9:30 am.
His partner, Marta Fascina, who is 53 years younger than Berlusconi, was by his side and joined them at the hospital.
His other children, Eleonora, Barbara, Pier Silvio, and Luigi, arrived later.
On Friday, his doctors announced that Berlusconi had been admitted to the San Raffaele Hospital for “scheduled checks for his known hematological condition” and clarified that his admission did not indicate “any critical aspect or alarm.”
Berlusconi returned to the hospital three weeks later after spending 44 days there due to pneumonia aggravated by leukemia.
Throughout that period, he was accompanied at all times by his girlfriend, Marta Fascina.
Even from the hospital, the magnate appeared in two videos: one to encourage Italians to vote in local elections and another to participate in his party’s convention, where he expressed his readiness to return to the political arena.
A medical report from his trusted doctor, Alberto Zangrillo, revealed that Berlusconi was receiving treatment for a “lung infection” caused by “a chronic hematological condition he had been dealing with for some time: myelomonocytic leukemia.”
Chronic myeloid leukemia is a type of blood cancer that primarily affects people over 60 years of age, and the doctors specified at that time that he was undergoing “specialized cytoreductive treatment” and chemotherapy.
Over the years, Berlusconi had been hospitalized on several occasions. He had a pacemaker implanted and was also admitted for COVID-19. In one of the most recent cases, in January 2022, he was hospitalized for a urinary infection. EFE
