Beijing will disinfect all its markets, restaurants and universities

Beijing, Jun 17 (efe-epa).- Beijing will disinfect all the markets, restaurants and university campuses of the capital and will carry out coronavirus tests on its workers and managers, municipal health authorities announced today.

The municipal spokesman, Xu Hejian, stated at a press conference that they will conduct “a comprehensive preventive inspection in all markets, restaurants and canteens,” which will include carrying out nucleic acid tests.

This measure is taken after the capital yesterday raised the health alert level from 3 to 2, after the outbreak of the virus in the capital’s main market, which has already left 137 cases since last Thursday.

Disinfection of all restaurants in Beijing and testing in all of them is a large-scale operation considering the large number of such establishments in the capital, numbering in the tens of thousands.

Beijing has disinfected until early hours yesterday, Tuesday, 276 markets for agricultural products and closed, 11 underground and semi-underground markets, in addition to 33,173 food delivery services at home.

Xu said they hope to complete the disinfection of markets and restaurants today, although nucleic acid testing will likely take longer.

A waiter from the Fengtai district, where the focus of the Xinfadi market outbreak is located, told the official Global Times newspaper that all staff at his establishment underwent coronavirus testing yesterday at a nearby designated location.

According to this newspaper, employees of five restaurants in one of Beijing’s largest shopping malls were also tested.

Beijing has suspended interprovincial flights and transprovincial group travel, after raising its level of health emergency yesterday, although level 2 – in which the capital was just two weeks ago – does not imply that measure or other drastic measures being adopted .

Among them, the suspension of all face-to-face classes in the city and the recommendation to residents to work from home, while communities in “high” risk areas have been sealed and no one will be allowed to leave them.

The underground markets also close, while libraries, museums and parks will open for a limited time and with a capacity of no more than 30 percent of their capacity.

The authorities’ priority is to prevent the virus from spreading or reaching other cities.

So far, it has only emerged that the pathogen was detected on a fish cutting board used by an imported salmon vendor in Xinfadi, and some Chinese experts said this outbreak of the virus is “probably more infectious” than that detected in Wuhan, the capital. Hubei Province, where COVID-19 began to spread.

In addition to testing and control and prevention measures, Beijing has stepped up inspection of the fresh produce, frozen pork, veal, lamb and poultry markets, and other businesses, including supermarkets and restaurants, are examined to ensure they are not in circulation. products contaminated with the virus.
