Singapore Airlines opens pop-up restaurant on grounded Airbus A380

Bangkok, Oct 24 (efe-epa).- Singapore Airlines on Saturday opened a pop-up restaurant on one of its many planes grounded by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The airplane of choice was an Airbus A380 stationed at Singapore’s Changi airport, which normally serves as a travel hub in the Southeast Asia region.

Customers can choose the classic economy menu for $39 or a more deluxe meal with a guided tour of the craft and a movie screening for $472.

The pop-up restaurant is only open for the next two weekends but reservations were full within 30 minutes of being made available.

The airline had previously mulled the possibility of launching so-called flights to nowhere so satiate customers hankering after an in-flight experience.

However, the company later scrapped the plan following criticism over the environmental impact it would have had.

Some 90 percent of the Singapore Airlines fleet has been grounded by the Covid-19 pandemic and last month the company announced it would have to fire 2,400 staff members as a result of the huge halt in global travel.

It has predicted that the number of customers using the airlines would not recover to pre-pandemic levels until 2024.

Several airlines have decided to temporarily re-purpose grounded planes as restaurants, including Thai Airways and Air France.EFE-EPA
