Tokyo 2020 imposes stricter rules on countries with Covid variants

Madrid, Jun 27 (EFE).- Tokyo 2020 Olympic delegations traveling from countries where different Covid-19 variants have been identified will have to undergo daily tests before leaving home, according to the Japanese government on Sunday.

The authorities divided countries into two groups, with the first one comprising Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Participants from those nations, including all staff members, are required to have a daily negative coronavirus test throughout the seven days ahead of their trip to Tokyo.

After arrival, athletes will face daily restrictions during the first week as they will not be allowed to interact or train with those from other countries during the first three days.

All athletes in the Games will be tested daily throughout their stay in Japan.

Group Two, made up of Bangladesh, Egypt, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and Vietnam, must have negative Covid-19 tests in the three days before traveling to Japan, as well as the three days after their arrival.

These groups are subject to change, the government said in a statement sent to international federations, adding that these rules will be applied in order to control and stop the spread of the virus. EFE
