Singapore Open gets underway amid strict Covid rules

Bangkok, Feb 22 (efe-epa).- Singapore Open kicked off Monday behind closed doors amid restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Tennis players, coaching teams and referees coming from outside Singapore will have to undergo daily PCR tests among other measures imposed by the organizers.

At least 200 people have arrived in Singapore for the ATP Tour 250 tournament, including Croatia’s Marin Cilic, a former top-10 player, ranked No. 44, and Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, world No. 35.

Fans are not allowed to attend the first rounds of the tournament, which come to an end on Sunday, but 250 people could have the chance to watch the semifinal or the final from the stadium if no new local Covid-19 cases are detected.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Singapore has reported 59,869 cases, mostly in outbreaks occurring in barracks where immigrant workers live. There have also been 29 related deaths.

Health authorities on Sunday announced 11 new cases, all from abroad and found in quarantine centers. EFE-EPA
