Snapchat permanently terminates Trump’s account
Washington DC, Jan 13 (efe-epa).- Snapchat announced Wednesday that it has decided to “permanently” terminate the account of the outgoing United States president.
The decision comes days after the company announced the indefinite suspension of Donald Trump’s account following the assault on the US Capitol by his supporters.
“In the interest of public safety, and based on his attempts to spread misinformation, hate speech, and incite violence, which are clear violations of our guidelines, we have made the decision to permanently terminate his account,” a spokesperson of Snap Inc., the parent company of the app, said in a statement.
Snap said that after indefinitely suspending Trump’s account last week, it has been “assessing what long term action is in the best interest of our Snapchat community.”
On Wednesday, Trump became the first US president in history to be impeached twice, this time on the charge of “incitement of insurrection.”
Several major social media platforms have taken action against him in response to the violent assault on the Capitol in Washington DC on Jan. 6, which resulted in the deaths of five people.
On Tuesday, YouTube announced that it had decided to suspend the channel of the US president, who will not be able to upload new content for at least seven days, nearly the remainder of his term.
“After careful review, and in light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence, we removed new content uploaded to the Donald J. Trump channel and issued a strike for violating our policies for inciting violence,” a YouTube spokesperson had said in a statement on its official Twitter account.
“It now has its 1st strike & is temporarily prevented from uploading new content for a *minimum* of 7 days,” the statement added.
On Jan. 8, Twitter permanently suspended Trump’s account “due to the risk of further incitement of violence.”
Trump has posted more than 55,000 tweets during over 11 years on his account, which has 89 million followers.
Facebook and Instagram have also blocked the president from using his accounts until the transfer of power on Jan. 20, while Twitch has deactivated his profile indefinitely. EFE-EPA
