Colombian head to polls in divisive presidential election

Bogota, May 29 (EFE).- Colombians headed to polls on Sunday to vote in a divisive presidential election.

The 102,152 polling stations opened at 8 am local time (1 pm GMT) and will close at 4:00 p.m. local time (9 pm GMT).

Six candidates are running for the presidency, including the favorite in all voting intention polls; the leftist Gustavo Petro, leader of the Historic Pact for Colombia coalition and the right-wing Federico “Fico” Gutiérrez.

The rest of the candidates are independent populist Rodolfo Hernández, from the League of Anti-Corruption Governors, Sergio Fajardo, from the Hope Center Coalition; evangelical pastor and senator John Milton Rodríguez, from Free Fair Colombia, and conservative lawyer Enrique Gómez Martínez, from the National Salvation movement.

Colombia’s president, Iván Duque, accompanied by his wife María Juliana Ruiz and several senior officials, casted their ballots on Saturday in Bogota and called on the Colombians to vote.

The government has deployed over 300,000 members of the military and the police to guarantee the security of the process. EFE
