India records lowest number of coronavirus cases since May 2020

New Delhi, Nov 22 (EFE).- India recorded 8,488 fresh cases of the coronavirus on Monday, marking the lowest daily infections since May 2020, according to the country’s health ministry.

With this, the total number of Covid-19 infections has risen to 34,5 million since the start of the pandemic, making India the second most affected country in the world behind the United States, which, according to Johns Hopkins University, has recorded a total 47,7 million cases.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 249 deaths from the coronavirus, taking the total number of fatalities to 465,911.

These figures are in stark contrast to those recorded during the second wave of the pandemic in May with more than 400,000 cases and over 4,500 deaths everyday.

However, experts claimed that the actual number was significantly higher, given overcrowded hospitals and crematoriums in the country during that period, apart from a lack of oxygen for medical use in several regions.

Experts also expected a third wave to hit the country between September and October, especially due to the increase in travel and family gatherings during the season of religious festivities at this time.

However, so far the number of cases have continued to decline.

The authorities have administered over 1.16 billion doses, with 401 million people having received both shots, under its vaccination campaign, the government’s great hope against the disease. EFE
