Sophia Loren undergoes emergency surgery after fall in home

Rome, Sep 25 (EFE).- Italian icon Sophia Loren underwent surgery for a hip fracture in Geneva on Sunday after a fall at her Swiss home.

She will have to spend several days in hospital and undergo rehabilitation.

The Oscar-winning Italian actress, who turned 89 recently, was scheduled to open a restaurant – the fourth one bearing her name – in the Italian city of Bari this week.

She was also set to receive honorary citizenship from the city.

The restaurant said that Loren would not be able to travel to Bari due to her surgery, which went well, it added.

The actress’ sons, Edoardo and Carlo, are with her, the restaurant said.

Loren’s latest film, “La vita davanti a sé” (The Life Ahead) was shot in Bari in 2020.

The movie, an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Romain Gary, was directed by her son, Edoardo Ponti.

In September, the Italian movie star, who won an Academy Award for best actress in 1962 for “La ciociara” (Two Women), attended Armani’s “One Night Only” fashion show at the Arsenale in Venice.

In June, she was named the “godmother” of the 100th anniversary edition of the Verona Opera Festival. EFE
