Hispanic Families Lose Everything in Corner Park Apartments Fire

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Hace dos semanas, aproximadamente, ocho familias hispanas de Memphis vivieron lo que quizás fue el peor día de sus vidas tras haber sido víctimas de un voraz incendio que consumió no sólo sus hogares, sino todas sus pertenencias. Afortunadamente, no hubo muertos ni heridos.

El suceso ocurrió el domingo, 21 de abril, a las 10 AM, en uno de los edificios de Corner Park Apartments, ubicado en el 4150 Winchester Road (esquina con Lamar); y, aunque los bomberos llegaron casi de inmediato, no fue mucho lo que se pudo hacer.

De acuerdo con el reporte de la investigación, el incendio, que en menos de una hora acabó con el edificio, fue causado por un corto circuito en uno de los apartamentos del segundo piso. “Dejaron una estufa encendida, se sobrecalentó la resistencia y eso hizo un corto circuito”, dijo Sophía Arriola, gerente de Corner Park Apartments.

Al parecer, agregó Arriola, la estufa estuvo encendida como por unas cinco horas y el apartamento estaba solo, ya que los inquilinos habían salido de paseo.

Ante esta situación, el propietario de Corner Park Apartments dio órdenes para reubicar a las familias afectadas a otros apartamentos. Sin embargo, algunas de estas personas prefirieron pasar la noche con otros familiares o en un hotel gracias a la ayuda que recibieron de la Cruz Roja Americana. Al día siguiente, ya todos estaban en su apartamento asignado dentro del mismo conjunto residencial.

Aun así, estas familias, que en su mayoría provienen de Guatemala y Honduras, necesitan de la ayuda humanitaria de la comunidad. Como se dijo anteriormente, lo perdieron absolutamente todo, incluyendo sus documentos personales. Por lo tanto, necesitan muebles, mesas, sillas, camas, artículos de higiene personal, artículos para el hogar y otros de uso diario. En cuanto a la ropa, recientemente se hizo una colecta en donde se pudieron recaudar suficientes prendas de vestir tanto para niños como para adultos.

Por otro lado, Arriola comentó que es muy importante respetar las reglas de seguridad de los apartamentos y no quitar las alarmas ni los detectores de humo; de lo contrario, estarían más expuestos al peligro y correrían el riesgo de sufrir quemaduras o asfixia (por el monóxido de carbono). También se aconseja comprar una póliza de seguro que incluya cobertura para muebles, electrodomésticos y otros objetos personales, en caso de pérdida total por fenómenos naturales, incendio, inundación, etc.

Dichas recomendaciones son para todos en general, no importa en dónde vivan ni la cultura que tengan. Como dicen por ahí, “más vale prevenir que lamentar”.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — About two weeks ago, eight Hispanic families in Memphis lived what was perhaps the worst day of their lives after being victims of a raging fire that consumed not only their homes, but all of their belongings. Fortunately, there were no deaths or injuries reported.

The event occurred on Sunday, April 21, at 10 AM, in one of the buildings of Corner Park Apartments, located at 4150 Winchester Road; and, although the firefighters arrived almost immediately, they could not do too much.

According to the investigation report, the fire, which burned the whole unit in less than an hour, was due to a short circuit that started in one of the apartments on the second floor. “They left the stove on and that is what caused a short circuit,” said Sophia Arriola, the manager at Corner Park Apartments.

Apparently, as stated by Arriola, the stove had been left unattended for about five hours as the renters were out.

Given this situation, the owner of Corner Park Apartments gave instructions to relocate the affected families to other apartments. However, some of these people preferred to spend the night with other relatives or in a hotel thanks to the help they received from the American Red Cross. The next day, they were all in their designated apartments within the same residential complex.

Nevertheless, these families, who are mostly from Guatemala and Honduras, need the humanitarian aid of the community. As it was mentioned before, they lost absolutely everything, including their personal documents. Therefore, they need furniture, tables, chairs, beds, toiletries, household items and other everyday items. As for clothes, enough garments for both children and adults have already been donated.

In addition to this, Arriola said that it is very important to respect and follow the security rules of the apartments and not to remove the alarms or smoke detectors; otherwise, there would be a higher risk for exposure to danger, burning or suffocation (from carbon monoxide). It is also advisable to buy an insurance policy that includes coverage for furniture, appliances and other personal items, in case of total loss due to natural disasters, fire, flood, etc.

These recommendations are for everyone in general, no matter where they live or the culture they have. As some people say, “it’s better to be safe than sorry.”
