Southaven Approves Utility Rate Increase
Southaven aprueba aumento de cuotas de servicios públicos

SOUTHAVEN, MS (The DeSoto Times Tribune) — Residents in Southaven will see their water and sewer rates increase in the coming year.
The Board of Aldermen approved the rate hike on Tuesday as a result of the rising costs the city is being charged by the Horn Lake Creek Basin Interceptor Sewer District to treat the city’s wastewater.
Residential water rates will increase to $2.89 per unit for water and $2.96 per unit for sewer. Commercial customers will see their rates increase to $3.85 per unit for water and $4.44 for sewer.
City Attorney Nick Manley told officials that Memphis, which treats sewage from Southaven and Horn Lake at its south Memphis treatment plant, has incurred additional expenses due to having to make upgrades to the system and is charging the district more to treat the wastewater coming from Mississippi.
Manley said the rate increase did not have anything to do with the current lawsuit. Memphis has filed a federal lawsuit asking to be allowed to end a 40-year agreement with the sewer district.
Manley forewarned the board to expect additional rate hikes in the coming years.
Alderman Charlie Hoots asked whether the city had any choice in the matter.
Manley said while the city isn’t responsible for absorb the increase, it won’t have enough money for repairs if they don’t boost the rates.
Mayor Darren Musselwhite said Memphis has had the right to increase the rates since 2012 but hasn’t done so.
