Southwest Tennessee Community College Wins National Safety Award

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WREG) — En este año ha habido al menos una docena de tiroteos en escuelas, pero la policía del campus de Southwest Tennessee Community College dice que están preparados para cualquier cosa.

Angela Webb es la directora de Servicios de Policía y Seguridad Pública de Southwest Tennessee Community College. Ella ha sido oficial de policía durante 34 años, y pasó 29 años en la ciudad de Memphis.

“Mi opinión personal es que no vamos a ser víctimas”, dijo. “Vamos a sobrevivir, sea cual sea el evento, y me siento mal por la persona que nos vaya a probar”.

De las 1.200 universidades en todo el país, Webb y su equipo son ganadores en 2019 del Premio a la Excelencia de la Asociación Americana de Colegios Comunitarios, reconociendo el excepcional trabajo de seguridad.

Webb dice que este tipo de trabajo les permite perfeccionar sus programas de seguridad, desde la capacitación en profundidad con empleados y oficiales hasta los ejercicios activos con los alumnos.

“Estoy muy triste por el hecho de que estamos experimentando este tipo de cosas”, dijo.

Como otra capa de seguridad, la universidad decidió agregar un elemento tecnológico llamado la aplicación Rav Guardian, que es similar a un sistema de amigos.

“Pueden ir a la aplicación y entrar en un cronómetro y decir: ‘Me voy del edificio académico y debería estar en mi auto en dos minutos’“.

La persona puede enviar la alerta a familiares, amigos o a la policía del campus.

Si a un oficial no se le despeja el mensaje de la persona después de dos minutos, pueden rastrear inmediatamente dónde se encuentran.

Esto es algo más que Webb dice que ayudará a los estudiantes y al personal a sentirse seguros en un momento en el que los campus son un objetivo de posibles tiradores.

MEMPHIS, TN (WREG) — Already this year there have been at least a dozen school shootings, but campus police at Southwest Tennessee Community College say they’re prepared for anything.

“My personal feeling is, we’re not going to be victims,” she said. “We’re going to survive whatever the event is, and I just feel bad for the person that tries us.”

Out of 1,200 colleges across the country, Webb and her team are 2019 winners of the American Association of Community Colleges’ Award of Excellence, recognizing exceptional safety work.

From in-depth training with employees and officers, to active drills with students, Webb says this kind of work allows them to perfect their safety programs.

“I am very sad that we’re in the time that we’re in that we are experiencing these kinds of things,” she said.

As another security layer, the college decided to add a technology element called the Rav Guardian app, which is similar to a buddy system.

“They can go on the app and enter in a timer and say, ‘I’m leaving the academic building and I should be in my car in two minutes.’“

The person can then send the alert to family, friends or campus police.

If an officer doesn’t have the person’s message cleared after two minutes, they can immediately track where they are.

This is just something else Webb says will help students and staff feel safe in a time where campuses are a target.
