Ukraine has recaptured 24 sq km around Bakhmut

Kyiv, Jul 10 (EFE).- The Ukrainian counteroffensive has recovered 24 sq km around the city of Bakhmut, on the eastern front and practically entirely occupied by Russia, the Ukrainian army said Monday.

The Defense General Staff issued the statement on the Ukrainian army’s official Telegram account.

Four of those square kilometers were recovered by Ukrainian troops during the past week, in which several Kyiv spokesmen reported periodic advances in the area without giving figures on the reconquered surface.

The report added that Ukrainian forces are consolidating in the retaken areas and continue to inflict damage with artillery fire on enemy targets identified by their intelligence.

“The enemy resists, moves units and troops, and actively uses its reserves,” Ukrainian General Staff spokesman Andrii Kovalov said in the statement. “Intense fighting continues here.”

In a separate statement, Kovalov said Ukraine resists Russian offensives in Avdivka and Marinka, located, like Bakhmut, on the eastern front.

Ukraine launched its long-awaited ground counteroffensive more than a month ago with attack operations on the flanks of Bakhmut and – from the south-west of the Donetsk province and the west of Zaporizhia – toward the occupied cities of Melitopol and Berdyansk, in the southeast from Ukraine.

Kyiv has so far announced the recapture in this campaign of 130 sq km in the south and 24 in the east. EFE
