Putin congratulates Erdogan on victory, shows support for his policies

Moscow, May 29 (EFE).- Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his victory in the second round of the presidential elections and said his re-election is a test of popular support for his policies, in a message posted on the Kremlin website.

“The victory in the elections was the logical outcome of your dedicated work as President of (Turkey), a clear demonstration of the Turkish people’s support for your efforts to consolidate state sovereignty and pursue an independent foreign policy,” Putin’s message read.

He wrote about Erdogan’s personal contribution to strengthening friendly Russian-Turkish relations and mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.

“I would like to affirm my readiness to continue our constructive dialogue concerning relevant issues on the bilateral, regional and international agenda,” he added.

In congratulating him, Putin stressed the importance of the implementation of joint projects in the field of energy, such as the construction of the Akkuyu power plant and the creation of a gas center in Turkey.

In the second round, with 99.5 of the votes counted, Erdogan received 52.1 percent of the votes and his rival, Social Democrat Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, 47.9 percent, according to the Turkish electoral authorities. EFE
