Spain, France, Portugal agree on green energy, gas corridor
Brussels, Oct 20 (EFE).- Spain, France and Portugal have agreed to abandon the MidCat gas interconnector project between France and Spain and replace it with a green energy corridor, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Thursday.
“We have reached an agreement to replace the MidCat project with a new project called the green energy corridor that will link the Iberian Peninsula to France and therefore to the European energy market,” Sanchez told reporters in Brussels following a meeting with his Portuguese counterpart Antonio Costa and French president Emmanuel Macron.
The green energy corridor will connect Barcelona to Marseille and transport green hydrogen, as well as gas during the transition.
“It will be a pipeline to transport green hydrogen but also gas, during the transition, to supply the European market,“ the prime minister said.
Sanchez added the agreement was “very good news” for the three countries, the European Union, and the commitment to ecological transition.
He added that the interconnection was building solidarity between EU countries in the face of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s “energy blackmail.”
The three leaders will meet again on December 8 and 9 in Alicante on the sidelines of the Euro-Mediterranean Summit to be held in the Spanish city. EFE
