Biden signs emergency measures as tropical storm nears Puerto Rico

Washington, Sep 18 (EFE).- United States president Joe Biden on Sunday declared an emergency situation in Puerto Rico as Tropical Storm Fiona bore down on the island with the potential of becoming a hurricane in the coming hours.

The president’s emergency declaration authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to manage the disaster relief response.

“Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency,” a White House statement said.

Puerto Rico governor Pedro Pierluisi late Saturday announced a local state of emergency and said he had requested federal assistance.

Tropical Storm Fiona is nearing hurricane strength and is expected to bring torrential rain and mudslides to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, according to the National Hurricane Center.

It has a max sustained wind speed of 110 kph (70mph) and is due to move over or near Puerto Rico throughout the day. EFE
