China widens anti-espionage law to include cyberattacks on state entities

Beijing, Apr 27 (EFE).- China has expanded its counter-espionage legislation to encompass cyberattacks and collaboration with spy organizations.

The revisions were adopted a day ago by the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, according to the official Global Times.

According to the Times, the revised law clarifies the definition of espionage by explicitly classifying “collaborating with spy organisations and their agents” and “conducting cyber-attacks against state organs, confidential-related units, or critical information infrastructure” as espionage activities.

The amended law will come into force on July 1.

Wang Aili, the director of the Criminal Law Department of the Legislative Affairs Commission, said the reform “adheres to a problem-oriented approach, focusing on key issues in the implementation of the current counter-espionage Law,”

The issues include a narrow scope of espionage activities, inadequate security precaution systems, and insufficient administrative law enforcement authority.

The amended law refines security precaution provisions and clarifies the main responsibilities of state organs and social organizations in counter-espionage security safeguards. EFE
