Madrid, Jan 31 (efe-epa).- Spain and Portugal have temporarily restored checks along their shared border until at least 10 February as authorities in Lisbon scramble to bring surging Covid-19 cases under control.
The new measures, introduced Sunday after Portugal voted to extend its state of emergency, only allow people to cross the border for work and study as well as to visit partners.
Spaniards in Portugal will be permitted to return to Spain. The border, which runs over 1,200 kilometers, is Portugal’s only land frontier. It was temporarily closed during the first wave of Covid-19 in March 2020.
Portuguese health authorities on Saturday reported 293 Covid-related deaths and more than 12,400 new cases. EFE-EPA
