Man stabbed to death during Argentine Second Division match

Buenos Aires, Feb 4 (EFE).- A 43-year-old man lost his life on Saturday in Argentina during a Second Division football match between Chacarita Juniors and Maipú when violence erupted among fans.

The altercation reportedly began among supporters of the local club Chacarita Juniors in the Popular Tribune area, known as ‘La Famosa.’ It escalated outside the stadium, leading to a physical confrontation, with one person sustaining a fatal stab wound to the chest.

Despite being transported to a hospital promptly, the victim, identified as Jorge Daniel Durán, could not be stabilized.

Although the match was temporarily halted for about 20 minutes, it resumed and concluded with a 2-0 victory for the home team, both goals scored in the first half by Matías Pisano (m.18, penalty) and Ramiro Costa (m.45+2).

The hosts expressed their regret over the tragic incident on its social media channels and gave police the access to the stadium’s security cameras to know what happened.

The statement said the club would cooperate with the authorities and vowed to expel any member found involved in the incident, emphasizing that such actions are contrary to the club’s values.

Violence has been common issue in Argentine football.

Earlier a clash between fans, though not fatal, took place last weekend when River Plate’s ‘barra brava’ clashed with other supporters ahead of the match against Argentinos Juniors.

At least 30 people were detained and later released but banned from entering a soccer field for the next four years. EFE
