Spain supports Ukraine’s admission to EU, Albares says

Rome, Italy, May 20 (EFE).- Spain supports Ukraine’s aspiration to join the European Union, Spain’s foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, said Friday.

“We are waiting for the Commission’s opinion, because the EU has its procedures, but if that opinion is positive, Spain supports the aspirations of Ukraine to be a candidate to the EU,” Albares told Efe at the Council of Europe foreign ministers meeting in Turin.

Albares said this was “the time for unity” in the EU to show “clear support” for Ukraine to join the bloc.

“We all have to do everything possible to defend a free, sovereign and democratic Ukraine,” he urged.

The foreign minister added that Spain was committed to joining the investigation into war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.

“When one sees the massacres in Bucha and in Mariupol, no one has the slightest doubt that war crimes are being committed and Spain is supporting Ukraine by joining the investigation into these war crimes,” he said.

The foreign ministers at the meeting in Turin agreed Friday that a summit with the 46 heads of states and governments should be held in the near future to address the war in Ukraine.

“During the session, the desire emerged to organize a summit of the 46 heads of state of the Council of Europe countries to help Ukraine overcome the dramatic damage of the war and to accompany it in its reconstruction,” Italian foreign minister, Luigi Di Maio, said. EFE
