Triathlete Flora Duffy gives Bermuda first Olympic gold in history

San Juan, Jul 27 (EFE).- Bermuda on Tuesday celebrated its first-ever Olympic gold medal won by Flora Duffy in the women’s triathlon at Tokyo 2020.

Duffy’s win also gave Bermuda the title of the smallest country in the world to win a Summer Olympics gold, and its second medal, after Clarence Hill’s bronze in the boxing in Montreal 1976.

The 33-year-old 2016 and 2017 world champion won at the Odaiba Marine Park in the Japanese capital after completing the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer cycle and 10-km run in one hour, 55 minutes and 36 seconds.

Briton Georgia Taylor-Brown took silver, and American Katie Zaferes, the bronze.

Bermuda’s Premier David Burt was one of Duffy’s excited compatriots who took to social media to congratulate her.

“Flora did it! I am extremely proud of Flora Duffy’s gold medal performance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics! Words cannot do justice to such an incredible effort from an incredible athlete,” Burt wrote.

“This remarkable achievement is a true testament to Flora’s unwavering commitment and genuine perseverance in training and her preparation. The people of Bermuda are bursting with pride and admiration for this humble champion.”

With the triumph, Bermuda entered the medal table among the 29 nations with at least one gold in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. EFE
