Spain wakes up to clean-up operation after torrential rain

Madrid, Sep 2 (EFE).- Several Spanish regions took stock Thursday of the damage caused by torrential rain that swept over most of the country over the last 24 hours.

The low pressure system brought heavy rain, hail and strong winds that damaged property, flooded roads and temporary power cuts to some of the worst-affected areas. Damages are estimated to run into the millions of euros.

Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, thanked the country’s emergency services for their “tireless work” in handling the response to the adverse weather conditions.

The region of Castilla-La Mancha, to the south of Madrid, was one of the worst affected.

Police officers rescued 37 people trapped by floods in the town of Cosiba, which lies south of the historic city of Toledo.

In the coastal region of Valencia, eastern Spain, several cars had to be rescued from floods and emergency services received 671 calls related to the stormy conditions, the majority for trapped cars or flooded property.

The Catalan town of Alcanar recorded half a year’s rainfall in the space of one day and the regional government declared a disaster zone response for the worst-hit areas.

Although an amber alert for torrential rains was issued for the Madrid region for Wednesday evening into Thursday, the metropolitan area escaped the worst of the adverse weather. EFE
