Spain’s Nadal ends his 2021 season due to knee injury

Madrid, Aug 20 (EFE).- Spain’s Rafael Nadal announced Friday he is ending his 2021 season due to a foot injury.

“Hello everyone: I wanted to let you know that unfortunately I have to end the 2021 season.

Honestly, I have been suffering a lot more than I should with my foot for a year and I need to take some time,” the tennis player posted on Twitter.

“Having discussed it with the team and family, this decision has been made and I believe that it is the way forward to try to recover and recover well,” he added.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner will miss the US Open, having already been sidelined for the Cincinnati Masters and Canadian Open last week due to the injury.

The 35 year old didn’t compete in Wimbeldon nor the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Nadal sustained the injury in June at the French Open when he lost his title for the first time since 2016 in the semi finals against Novak Djokovic.

“I am determined to do whatever it takes to regain the best possible shape, to continue competing for the things that really motivate me and the things that I have done during all these years.

“I am convinced that with the recovery of the foot and obviously a very important daily effort this can be achieved. I will work as hard as I can to make it happen,” Nadal assured his fans. EFE
