Spanish Christians commemorate resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday

Madrid, Apr 9 (EFE).- Christians across Spain celebrated Easter Sunday, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus with hundreds of processions and rituals such as the burning of Judas.

In the central city of Aranda de Duero, celebrations began with the Descent of the Angel, a ceremony that dates back hundreds of years and that attracted large crowds.

Residents in the northern town of Alfaro, meanwhile, burned effigies of Judas and other figures, including politicians, who have shown “reprehensible” behavior over the past year.

“Judas was a traitor and that’s why he deserved this ending, and we also want to burn this year’s bad on Easter Sunday to make way for better things,” councilor Carmen Ovejas said.

Processions took place throughout the country, with many kicking off early in the morning.

The Holy Week in Madrid ended with the traditional Tamborrada drum parade in the capital city’s Plaza Mayor. EFE
