Este miércoles, 12 de septiembre, comienza el Festival de Cine Hispano 2018, organizado por la Universidad de Memphis, con la exhibición de la comedia Paraíso, de la directora mexicana Mariana Chenillo. La proyección gratuita de la cinta –en español con subtítulos en inglés y abierta a todo el público– se realizará en el teatro University Center Theater (499 University, sala 145), a las 6 p.m.
La película se adentra, de manera honesta y sutil, en la intimidad de una mujer que se ve constreñida por una sociedad dominada por las apariencias físicas. Carmen (Daniela Rincón) es una entrañable esposa que deja su apacible vida en el suburbio Ciudad Satélite, del municipio de Naucalpan de Juárez, para seguir a Alfredo (Andrés Almeida), su marido, en una nueva experiencia laboral en la ciudad de México.
La capital mexicana se volverá un espacio de descubrimiento personal que va a desafiar la estabilidad del joven matrimonio. Ambos toman conciencia de su sobrepeso, pero solo uno de ellos logrará deshacerse de los kilos de más.
En Paraíso, el acierto de Chenillo consiste en equilibrar la comedia, el drama y el romance, a través de un gran respeto por sus personajes. Junto con examinar la relación de la pareja, la película ofrece un cuidadoso retrato de una subjetividad femenina para exponer expectativas sociales, conflictos de autoestima y una solidaridad de género.
El Festival de Cine Hispano incluye, también, la presentación de las películas Pelo malo (25 de sept.), Ixcanul (2 de oct.), El club (9 de oct.) y Mr. Kaplan (19 de oct.). The 2018 Hispanic Film Festival, organized by the University of Memphis, begins with the exhibition of the comedy Paradise, by the Mexican director Mariana Chenillo. This movie – in Spanish with subtitles in English – is coming to the University Center Theater (499 University, Room 145), on Wednesday, September 12th, at 6 p.m. This is a free event, open to the public.
The film enters, subtly, into the private world of a woman, oppressed by a society where physical appearances prevail. Carmen (Daniela Rincón) is an endearing wife who leaves her peaceful life in the suburb of Ciudad Satélite, in the municipality of Naucalpan de Juárez, to follow Alfredo (Andrés Almeida), her husband, in a new job opportunity experience in Mexico City.
The Mexican capital will become a space of personal discovery that will challenge the stability of the young couple. Carmen and Alfredo become aware that they are overweight, but only one of them will manage to get rid of the extra pounds.
In Paradise, Chenillo successfully balances film genres such as comedy, drama, and romance, and carefully develops her characters. In addition to examining the relationship of the couple, the film offers a fine portrait of a female subjectivity to expose social expectations, conflicts of self-esteem and gender identity.
The Hispanic Film Festival also includes the screening of the films Bad Hair (Sept. 25), Volcano (Oct. 2), The Club (Oct. 9) and Mr. Kaplan (Oct. 19).
