23-Year-Old Running for a Seat in Tennessee’s Statehouse

GOODLETTSVILLE, TN (WREG / LPL) — Avery Field sabe que no es un candidato político típico.

A los 23 años, no tiene dinero reservado para pagar a los miembros del personal o comprar “gracia” de campaña. Como docente, pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo con los estudiantes, sin estrategias.

Pero dijo que lo tradicional no es lo que Tennessee necesita porque los candidatos tradicionales no han resuelto problemas de hace décadas.

“Pienso que la masacre de Columbine tuvo lugar en 1999. Han pasado casi 20 años y todavía no podemos mantener a nuestros estudiantes más seguros”, dijo Field. “Creo que necesitamos algunas ideas nuevas y nuevas soluciones a esos problemas”.

Field se ejecuta en una plataforma multifacética, pero tiene una fuerte convicción sobre la educación.

Dijo que a raíz del tiroteo en la escuela Parkland, ha visto legisladores proponer soluciones sin escuchar a los maestros de Tennessee, particularmente un proyecto de ley que armaría a algunos educadores con armas de fuego.

“Tuve una conversación con algunos de los educadores del Condado de Sumner, y lo que me dijeron es que las expectativas sobre los maestros ya son increíblemente altas”, dijo Field. “Agregar ser el guardaespaldas personal de nuestros estudiantes es algo que les dificultaría aún más tener éxito en sus trabajos”.

Field también dijo que apoya políticas que educan a todo el niño, incluido un enfoque en la salud mental en las escuelas.

“Necesitamos hacer un mejor trabajo invirtiendo en todo el niño y preocuparnos por el bienestar social de nuestros estudiantes”, dijo Field. “Necesitamos invertir en el aprendizaje social y emocional para que puedan participar y aprender, pero también para que nuestras escuelas sean más seguras”.

Field dijo que sabe que algunos pueden tener dificultades para mirar más allá de su edad, pero dijo que Tennessee no puede permitirse el lujo de esperar a que nuevos líderes den un paso al frente.

Field se postula como republicano para representar al Distrito 45, que cubre partes de Goodlettsville, Gallatin, Hendersonville y más.

At 23 years old, he doesn’t have money set aside to pay staff members or buy campaign swag. As a teacher, he spends a majority of his time with students, not strategizing.

But he said traditional is not what Tennessee needs because traditional candidates have not solved decades-old problems.

“You think about Columbine taking place in 1999. It’s been almost 20 years, and we still can’t keep our students any safer,” Field said. “I think we need some new ideas and new solutions to those issues.”

Field is running on a multi-faceted platform, but feels strongly about education.

He said in the wake of the Parkland school shooting, he’s seen legislators propose solutions without listening to Tennessee teachers, particularly a bill that would arm some educators with guns.

“I had a conversation with some of Sumner County’s educators, and what they were telling me is the expectations on teachers are already incredibly high,” Field said. “Adding being the personal bodyguard of our students is something that would make it even more difficult for them to be successful doing their jobs.”

Field also said he supports policies that educate the whole child, including a focus on mental health in schools.

“We need to do a better job investing in the entire child and being concerned for the social wellbeing of our students,” Field said. “We need to invest in social-emotional learning so they’re able to participate and learn, but also to make our schools safer.”

Field said he knows some may have a hard time looking past his age, but he said Tennessee can’t afford to wait for new leaders to step forward.

Field is running as a Republican to represent District 45, which covers parts of Goodlettsville, Gallatin, Hendersonville, and more.
