Renovations Begin at Memphis Convention Center
MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — La renovación tan esperada del Centro de Convenciones de Memphis ya comenzó.
El alcalde Jim Strickland se unió a otros líderes de la ciudad para inaugurar la renovación.
Durante los próximos dos años, el centro de convenciones recibirá mejoras tanto en el interior como en el exterior. El proyecto viene con un costo de $135.8 millones, que se financiará a través de los impuestos en hoteles/moteles y los fondos de la Zona de Desarrollo Turístico.
Tomó tres rondas de licitación para encontrar un contratista y un plan que los mantendría por debajo del presupuesto. La ciudad también tuvo que volver a priorizar algunas de las mejoras.
Se espera que el proyecto esté terminado en el otoño del 2020.
La ciudad está optando por renovar y ampliar las instalaciones existentes en lugar de construir una nueva.
“Vale la pena señalar que la investigación demuestra que la renovación es la opción financieramente responsable en comparación con la construcción de una nueva instalación, que se estima que cuesta alrededor de $500 millones”, dijo Strickland en el correo electrónico.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — The long-awaited renovation of the Memphis Convention Center begins Thursday.
Mayor Jim Strickland joined other city leaders for a groundbreaking.
Over the next two years, the convention center will get upgrades to both the interior and exterior. The project comes with a $135.8 million price tag, which is funded through the hotel/motel tax and Tourism Development Zone funds.
It took three rounds of bidding to find a contractor and a plan that would keep them under budget. The city also had to re-prioritize some of the upgrades.
The project is expected to be finished in fall 2020.
The city is opting to renovate and expand the existing facility instead of constructing a new one.
“It’s worth noting that research proves that renovation is easily the financially responsible option when compared to building a new facility, which is estimated to cost around $500 million,” Strickland said in the email.
