Thiago set for Merseyside move as Liverpool land deal

Berlin, Sep 17 (efe-epa).- Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcántara is moving to Merseyside after signing for an estimated 30 million euro with defending Premier League champions Liverpool, club officials said Thursday.

The Italian-born Spanish national had a year left on his contract at this year’s Champions League winners Bayern.

Thiago, who plays for the Spanish national team, will add depth to Liverpool’s midfield, slotting in with Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum and Naby Keita.

The Reds have had a quiet summer transfer window so far, with the only other notable signing being left-back Kostas Tsimikas, but held onto all their key players.

Bayern Munich’s manager Hansi Flick on Thursday described Thiago as a “great player and a great person” and congratulated Liverpool’s manager Jürgen Klopp on the signing.

“Thiago was an exceptional player and had great success here in the last seven years. He have a lot to the team,” he added.

“Both myself and my coaching team loved working with him, because he is an absolute professional and a wonderful person.”

Thiago, 29, arrived at the German powerhouse from Barcelona in 2013 for a fee of 25 million euro.

He was requested by then-Bayern manager and former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.

Bayern’s CEO, Karlheinz Rummennigge, confirmed the deal earlier in the day.
