US journalist killed covering Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

New York, Mar 13 (EFE).- United States journalist Brent Renaud was killed on Sunday when the car he was traveling in came under fire in Irpin, a heavily bombarded city adjacent to the capital Kyiv where efforts are underway to evacuate civilians, Ukrainian authorities and US media confirmed.

Another American journalist was injured in the attack and taken to hospital, local medics said.

The head of Kyiv’s police department Andriy Nebitov said in a Facebook post that Russian troops had opened fire on the car, killing Renaud, 51, and injuring another colleague as they covered the evacuations in Irpin.

He shared a photo of Renaud’s credentials, which stated that he was working for the New York Times, but the American newspaper later issued a statement clarifying that the award-winning reporter was not on assignment for the outlet.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of Brent Renaud’s death. Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker who had contributed to The New York Times over the years,” Cliff Levy, the NYT’s deputy managing editor, said in a statement.

“Though he had contributed to The Times in the past (most recently in 2015), he was not on assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine.”EFE
