Swiatek makes French Open 4th round, Badosa retired, Sabalenka stunned

Paris, May 28 (EFE).- Iga Swiatek on Saturday extended her jaw-dropping winning streak as she reached the French Open fourth round, while Paula Badosa retired with a right knee injury and Aryna Sabalenka was stunned.

The 2020 French Open champion prevailed over Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and a half for her 31st consecutive win.

Next up for the 20-year-old Polish will be China’s Zheng Qinwen, who qualified for the fourth round as Alizé Cornet retired trailing 6-0, 3-0 due to a left thigh injury.

A knee injury forced Spain’s Badosa, seeded No. 3, out of the tournament. Badosa had an initial 2-0 lead only to lose five games in a row to Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova.

It was then that she asked for a medical timeout to treat her knee, but it was in vain as she decided to retire a few games later, while trailing 3-6, 1-2.

The seventh-seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus squandered a one-set lead to be axed from the tournament at the hands of Camila Giorgi 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 in one hour and 42 minutes.

This makes Swiatek the lone top-10 seed at the French Open.

In her maiden French Open fourth round appearance, the Italian, the 28th seed, will take on Daria Kasatkina of Russia, who defeated Shelby Rogers in straight sets. EFE
