‘Exceptional’ St. Jude Gets Record Evaluation

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is receiving top honors.

For the second time in a row, the National Cancer Institute has awarded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital the highest possible rank of “exceptional” and the best numerical score in the hospital’s history.

The award comes during the renewal of the hospital’s $36 million Comprehensive Cancer Center grant.

“This is a marker of St Jude being one of the premier cancer centers in the world, as I said the only one dedicated to children,” said St. Jude Cancer Center Director Charles Roberts.

The Cancer Center links all research efforts at St. Jude, from the lab to the clinic, and it also works to help the community and educate the next generation of cancer researchers.

That research attracts the best and the brightest according to Roberts.

“This rating from the NCI identifies St Jude as just another marker of how impressive and impactful the work that is going on at St Jude,” Roberts said. “It’s very helpful to us on recruiting talent.”

He said the lifesaving work at St Jude is a celebrated collaboration of research and care.

“The Cancer Center represents and leads all of the cancer research going on at St Jude from basic science to the clinical research and so it’s an incredible number of individuals,” Roberts said. “Just on the faculty level, there are 115 people and then hundreds of people that are involved. Huge number of people involved so this achievement is really a reflection of the work of so many.”
