South Korea issues cold wave alerts

Seoul, Jan 25 (EFE).- South Korea issued cold wave alerts across the country on Wednesday as temperatures dipped and the southern regions, including the tourist island of Jeju, experienced heavy snowfall.

The Asian country issues a cold wave alert when the minimum temperature in the morning falls below minus 15 degrees Celsius for more than two consecutive days or when there is a sharp drop in temperatures that could cause potential damage.

In Seoul, the mercury plummeted to minus 19.3 degrees Celsius in the morning, with a wind chill of minus 25.7 degrees, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

Since 2000, the morning’s minimum temperature in the South Korean capital has dropped below minus 17 degrees Celsius only on nine days.

In mountainous areas of Gangwon province and the northern Gyeonggi province, the morning low was minus 25.1 degrees Celsius.

Weather authorities expect snowfall to continue throughout the day and forecast rainfall of more than 10 centimeters (4 inches) on the coast of Gyeonggi province and between 5 and 10 centimeters in the mountainous areas of the southern Jeju island, where airport operations returned to normal on Wednesday morning.
