Fiji to reopen its borders despite the omicron variant threat

Sydney, Australia, Nov 30 (EFE).- Fiji has decided to stick to its plans to reopen borders to international tourists starting Wednesday despite concerns over the emergence of the omicron variant of Covid-19 that has led countries around the world to impose travel restrictions.

In a video on the government’s Facebook page, Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama said he will receive in person tourists arriving in the country this Wednesday from Australia, the first since the country closed its borders in March 2020 against the pandemic.

The reopening is limited to tourists from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and almost all pacific nations and the measure has not been rolled back despite positive cases being detected in Australia and the United Kingdom.

With 90 percent of its population vaccinated, the prime minister trusted that the country will be able to welcome tourists again and rebuild a devastated tourism-dependent economy.

Fiji has recorded more than 52,000 infections, including 696 deaths, since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. EFE
