Student fatally stabs Spanish teacher in French Basque Country

Paris, Feb 22 (EFE).- A 16-year-old student stabbed her 50-year-old Spanish teacher to death Wednesday at the St. Thomas Aquinas school in St. Jean de Luz, in the French Basque Country, the government said.

The killing occurred shortly before 10 am at the private Catholic school, judicial sources added.

The teacher received first aid at the scene but succumbed to her injuries. The suspect, a minor, was immediately arrested and is being held at the Gendarmerie, the armed branch of police.

According to the national BFMTV channel, the 16-year-old male suffered from psychiatric problems and claimed that he heard voices before stabbing the teacher. He had no prior criminal record.

Government spokesman, Olivier Veran, sent a message of support to “the entire teaching community” and confirmed that the education minister, Pape Ndiaye, would be visiting the school later on Wednesday. EFE
