Indian army motorcyclist sets record by crossing 127-meter fire tunnel

New Delhi, Nov 10 (efe-epa).- A special motorcycle display team of the Indian army on Tuesday claimed to have set a Guinness world record when one of its members rode a motorbike through a 127 meters (416.6 feet) long tunnel of fire, breaking the earlier record of 120.4 meters possessed by two riders from South Africa.

The Army Supply Corps (ASC) Motorcycle Display Team, dubbed the “Tornadoes,” is known for performing stunts at national events as well as display shows in India and abroad.

“WorldRecord by ASC ·Tornadoes today. Longest fire tunnel ride ever. (..) Today the record was broken with 127 mtrs,” the Indian defense ministry’s public relations office tweeted on Tuesday.

The feat was achieved by Captain Shivam Singh, who crossed the distance within seconds in the southern city of Bengaluru on Tuesday evening, with photos from the event showing a long tunnel-like structure set on fire just before the rider zipped trough.

According to media report, Singh suffered minor burn injuries and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance that was kept waiting, while the motorbike he drove for the stunt was completely destroyed.

Now the Guinness World Record authorities have to officially certify if the Indian fulfilled all the conditions to set a new record, overtaking South African riders Enrico Schoeman and André de Kock, who had crossed a 120.4-meters long burning tunnel on Sep. 5, 2014.

The Tornadoes already possess several national and international records, including the Guinness world record for the most people riding a single motorcycle: in 2017, 58 of its members mounted a 500 CC Royal Enfield motorcycle for a distance of 1200 meters. EFE-EPA
