Stunned Germany knocked out as Morocco make history

Sports Desk, Aug 3 (EFE).- Germany crashed out of the World Cup as they were held to a 1-1 draw against South Korea.

The two-time winners had never failed to reach the knockout stages before, and came into the tournament as one of the favorites to go all the way.

They fell behind early through Cho So-hyun’s strike but Alexandra Popp equalized just before half-time, and at that point were going through.

But in Group H’s other match, World Cup debutantes Morocco went 1-0 up as their first half against group leaders Colombia drew to a close.

While the Germans pressed on for a winner, it would have been in vain because Morocco held on to seal a famous win and qualify for the round of 16.

It was a remarkable turnaround for the North Africans, who were hammered 6-0 by Germany in their opening match last week.

Colombia, who had won their opening two matches, will face Group F’s runner up Jamaica on Tuesday, while Morocco takes on France.EFE
