Pelosi meets Zelenskyy in unannounced visit to Kyiv

Lviv/ Kraków, Ukraine, May 1 (EFE).- The speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, met with Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenskyy during an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Sunday.

Pelosi is the highest-ranking US leader to visit Ukraine since the war began on 24 February.

During the meeting, they both discussed “security, humanitarian assistance economic assistance and eventually rebuilding when victory is won,” she said at a subsequent press conference held in the southeastern Polish city of Rzeszów.

The US delegation conveyed “a message of unity from the Congress of the United States, a message of appreciation from the American people for his leadership,” she added.

She pointed out that President Joe Biden asked the US Congress to dispatch $33 billion in humanitarian and military aid to Kyiv.

Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy’s Telegram channel posted a video in which Pelosi said “We are visiting you to say thank you for your fight for freedom”.

“Your fight is a fight for everyone, and so our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done,” she added.

Zelenskyy’s office posted images and a video of the meeting in which Zelenskyy welcomed Pelosi and a congressional delegation that included Chairman Jim McGovern, Chairman Gregory Meeks, Chairman Adam Schiff, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Congressman Bill Keating and Congressman Jason Crow.

“I am grateful to you for this signal of strong support from the United States, the people, and Congress – bicameral and bipartisan support. I highly appreciate this signal as President, as do our team and the people of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said in a statement published on Ukraine’s official website for the president.

“This shows that the United States today champions strong support for Ukraine in the war against Russian aggression,” he added. EFE
