Superb Spurs swat United aside with 2-0 home win

Sports Desk, Aug 19 (EFE).- Tottenham Hotspur comfortably beat a lackluster Manchester United 2-0 on Saturday.

United had started well at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, creating several decent openings in the first 20 minutes but were let down by poor finishing.

They also had a strong claim for a penalty turned down after Alejandro Garnacho’s shot hit Cristian Romero’s outstretched arm, but the Video Assistant Referee did not intervene.

Spurs slowly came into the game as the first half wore on, and hit the post twice in quick succession before the break.

Following an even first half, Pape Matar Sarr capped an excellent individual performance by opening the scoring just after half-time when he finished from close range.

Tottenham were in the ascendancy and the visitors were being overrun, offering little going forward and repeatedly gifting Spurs presentable chances to double their lead.

One of those eventually found the net in comical fashion as Lisandro Martinez swiped at a ball trickling across the goal to deflect it into the net.

While Spurs look rejuvenated under new manager Ange Postecoglou, United have now turned in two underwhelming displays after last week’s fortunate 1-0 win over a superior Wolverhampton Wanderers. EFE
