Sweden PM resigns after losing elections to right-wing bloc

Copenhague, Sep 15 (EFE).- Swedish prime minister Magdalena Andersson resigned Thursday after her center-left coalition was set to lose against the right wing bloc in legislative elections held on the weekend.

The right-wing opposition won Sunday’s election by three seats, 176 seats to 173, as 99% of votes had been counted.

After accepting the defeat on Wednesday, Andersson formally announced her resignation Thursday.

“They have a one or two seat advantage,” the prime minister told parliament. “It’s a thin majority, but it is a majority,” she added.

The speaker of parliament, Andreas Norlén, will most likely entrust the formation of a new government to Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson.

The Moderates, a liberal-conservative party, are expected to form a minority government with the Christian Democrats and the Sweden Democrats, a nationalist far-right party which has become the strongest force in the right wing bloc.

“I have told Norlén that if the conservatives change their minds and want to work with me instead of the Sweden Democrats, my door is open,” Andersson said. EFE
