National Civil Rights Museum Among 10 Recipients to Receive the Highest Nation’s Top Award for Museums and Libraries

 

MEMPHIS, TN (NCRM / LPL) — El Museo Nacional de los Derechos Civiles se encuentra entre las 10 instituciones que el Instituto de Servicios de Museos y Bibliotecas (Institute of Museum and Library Services/IMLS) anunció el martes, 7 de mayo, como los recipientes de la Medalla Nacional del 2019 para el Servicio de Museos y Bibliotecas, el honor nacional más alto otorgado a bibliotecas y museos que hacen aportes significativos y excepcionales a sus comunidades. En los últimos 25 años, el premio ha celebrado a instituciones que están haciendo una diferencia para las personas, las familias y las comunidades.

Seleccionados entre 30 finalistas nacionales, los ganadores de la Medalla Nacional del 2019 para el Servicio de Museos y Bibliotecas están abordando, a través de sus programas y servicios, problemas y desafíos únicos que las comunidades enfrentan hoy en día. Desde Florida hasta el estado de Washington y desde Tennessee hasta California, estas 10 organizaciones demuestran las muchas maneras en que los museos y las bibliotecas satisfacen las necesidades de las personas a las que sirven.

  • Distrito de Bibliotecas de Meridian (Meridian, ID)
  • Barona Band of Mission Indians – Centro Cultural y Museo de Barona (Lakeside, CA)
  • New Children’s Museum (San Diego, CA)
  • Centro de Historia Regional del Condado de Orange (Orlando, FL)
  • Museo Nacional de los Derechos Civiles en el Motel Lorraine (Memphis, TN)
  • Acuario de Carolina del Sur (Charleston, SC)

MEMPHIS, TN (NCRM/LPL) — The National Civil Rights Museum is among 10 institutions the Institute of Museum and Library Services announced on Tuesday, May 7, as recipients of the 2019 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to libraries and museums that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. Over the past 25 years, the award has celebrated institutions that are making a difference for individuals, families, and communities.

Selected from 30 national finalists, the winners of the 2019 National Medal for Museum and Library Service are addressing unique issues and challenges confronting communities today through their programs and services. From Florida to Washington State and Tennessee to California, these 10 organizations demonstrate the many ways museums and libraries are meeting the needs of the people they serve.

“We are humbled and honored to receive this prestigious award,” said Terri Lee Freeman, National Civil Rights Museum President.

The 2019 National Medal recipients are:

  • Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Library (Sequim, WA)
  • Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (Ann Arbor, MI)
  • New Haven Free Public Library (New Haven, CT)
  • Gulfport Public Library (Gulfport, FL)
  • Meridian Library District (Meridian, ID)
  • Barona Band of Mission Indians – Barona Cultural Center and Museum (Lakeside, CA)
  • New Children’s Museum (San Diego, CA)
  • Orange County Regional History Center (Orlando, FL)
  • National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel (Memphis, TN)
  • South Carolina Aquarium (Charleston, SC)

“It’s a pleasure to recognize the 10 recipients of the National Medal of Museum and Library Service,” said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. “Through their programs, services, and partnerships, these institutions exemplify the many ways that libraries and museums are positively transforming communities across the nation.”
