Alcarrás in running to represent Spain in Oscars international category

(Update 1: Adds quotes)

Madrid, Aug 25 (EFE).- The award-winning Alcarrás was among the three movies shortlisted to represent Spain in the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards due to take place in March next year.

Carla Simón’s Alcarrás, which tells the story of a Catalan farming family whose traditional peach orchard comes under threat, won the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival.

It is joined in Spain’s Oscars shortlist by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s Lullaby and Rofrigo Sorogoyen’s As Beasts.

Director Simón, whose first feature Summer 1993 was selected by Spain for the 90th Academy Awards although ultimately not nominated, spoke to Efe about Thursday’s news.

“I was really nervous,” she acknowledged, adding that nothing could be taken for granted when it came to awards.

“The possibility of representing Spain is very exciting,” she added.

Spain’s entry for the Academy Award category will be revealed on September 13.

The nominees were revealed Thursday at the Spanish film academy by Money Heist actor María Pedraza and the entity’s president Fernando Méndez Leite. EFE
