India’s daily Covid-19 tally doubles in a day to 91,000 cases
New Delhi, Jan 6 (EFE).- India added nearly 91,000 new Covid-19 infections Thursday, nearly double the cases registered a day ago as the third wave of the virus tightens its grip on the crowded country of 1.35 billion people.
The new infections in the last 24 hours from Wednesday morning are ten times more than India added eight days ago, even as more than half of the adult population is fully vaccinated.
Official data also indicated that more than half of the Indian residents had developed antibodies to form herd immunity against the disease.
The national capital territory of Delhi added 10,665 new infections in the last 24 hours, almost 100% more than a day ago.
It is the fastest rate of the spread of the infection in the city, where the number of daily cases hovered around 50 a month ago.
The western state of Maharashtra, whose capital is Mumbai, remains the worst hit, adding 26,538 cases over the past day.
The alarming rise of Covid-19 cases coincides with the spread of the Omicron variant of the virus in the country.
The new variant was detected in the country at the beginning of December, even as the authorities suspended international commercial flights two years ago.
India has opened its air space to a handful of countries under travel bubble agreements.
The good news is that hospitalization has remained low amid the Omicron spread.
The national capital has reserved more than 9,000 hospital beds for coronavirus patients.
However, on Thursday, only 782 were occupied, 22 by serious patients, Thursday.
India has accumulated more than 35 million Covid-19 cases, including 482,876 fatalities since the pandemic began two years ago.
The vaccination drive that began in January last year has led to the immunization of more than 620 million people fully vaccinated.
Some 871 million residents have received their first doses of the anti-covid vaccines. EFE
