China calls for political harmony with US as commerce ministers meet

Shanghai, China, Aug 28 (EFE).- China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao said Monday he was willing to work with United States counterpart Gina Raimondo, to allow the business communities of both countries to work together.

Wang spoke of the words on trade with China that Raimondo said a few months ago, adding that most of the exchanges with the country are “benign” and that this situation “must continue and will continue.”

The US representative said she would not negotiate or make concessions on issues related to national security, although she added that most of the trade between the two powers is not related to that issue.

The Commerce Secretary arrived Sunday in China for a four-day visit in an attempt to improve relations between the two countries, which are at their lowest point in decades.

Raimondo’s trip is the fourth by a senior US official to China in recent months after that of State Secretary Antony Blinken; Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Special Envoy for Climate Change Issues John Kerry.

Raimondo is expected to meet with senior Chinese government officials and US business leaders to discuss a range of issues, including US restrictions on technology exports to China, national security concerns and potential areas of cooperation. EFE
