Community Initiative Plans To Clean Up Areas Around Raleigh Schools

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) — A Mid-South community organization is stepping in to help fight blight at area schools. The ‘Take the Yard’ beautification project will focus on areas in and around Raleigh schools and the Raleigh Community Development Corporation is overseeing the project.

Rhonda Logan, the executive director for Raleigh CDC is helping spearhead this weekend’s cleanup. She and other volunteers will meet from 9:00 a.m. to noon and clean the grounds around the schools. It’s a project that’s bringing together various organizations including the school district. The goal is to fight blight and reinforce community pride. The students are the ones the project organizers hope to directly impact.

“When they walk up I want them to be impressed and to be wowed and to know something different is going on,” said Logan. “We want them to know that there’s something new and the community is involved and we’re behind them and that they’re special and they’re worth it.”

One of the volunteers who will be helping is Karl Ward with Breath of Life Christian Center where he was making sure the tools donated by Memphis City Beautiful and Clean Memphis are ready to be handed out.

“We’ve got leaf rakes, shovels, wheel barrels, brooms, pruning shears and clippers,” said Ward. “There are enough tools here so if enough people come out they can take part in it. They’ll be something for everybody to do.”

Ward said he’s excited to get to work Saturday.

“I’ll be doing whatever they ask me to do,” he said.

Inspecting the tools on a trailer, Ward recounted a time when the grounds around the schools were pristine. He hopes the look can be restored.

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said. “They used to do things in that little parking lot in front of the school but now you don’t really want to go down there. After this is over, it’ll make you just want to go park and just check it out and be comfortable being there.”
