MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — In a new attempt to reduce violence on interstate highways, as well as in the city’s neighborhoods and public places, MPD is reinforcing patrolling along with the collaboration of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

In a statement sent to La Prensa Latina, MPD explains that their Operation Safe Travels II is intended to eliminate or, at least, significantly reduce interstate shootings.

According to MPD, Operation Safe Travels II is comprised of officers both in marked squad cars and unmarked units. One or two officers from each precinct are assigned to their respective areas, and they will be patrolling throughout the interstate roadways day and night.

The goal of this initiative, which originally began in July 2019 and was reimplemented on January 28 of this year, is to deter aggressive drivers and thus reduce the alarming number of highway shootings (I-40, I -240, SR 385, etc.).

“The Memphis Police Department continues its efforts of community-policing and asks that all citizens get involved. No. 1 thing that citizens can do is if they see something, they should say something. If any suspicious activity is seen, the police should be called immediately. Also, if anyone has any information relative to an ongoing investigation, they should call Crime Stoppers (528-CASH [2274]). MPD cannot combat crime alone. We must have help from the citizens in order to be successful,” said Lieutenant Karen Rudolph, with the Public Information Office at the Memphis Police Department. “All drivers should be courteous drivers, drive at a safe distance, use a blinker, do not talk on a handheld, do not speed. And, again, if you see something, say something.”

So far this year, 7 shootings have been reported on the interstate highways in Memphis – from January 8, 2019 to January 29, 2020 there were a total of 51 shootings. From January 28 to February 1, MPD officers conducted over 340 traffic stops, wrote 144 moving citations, made 3 physical misdemeanor arrests, seized 2 guns, and wrote 42 misdemeanor citations and 27 courtesy citations.

These incidents have not only caused damage to vehicles, physical injuries, deaths and emotional traumas, but have left other drivers fearing for their own safety.
