Iran says ready to exchange prisoners with US

Tehran, Aug 17 (EFE).- Iran is ready to exchange prisoners with the United States, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said Wednesday.

“Iran is ready to immediately implement the existing agreement with the US regarding the releasing prisoners and returning them to their families,” Kanaani said.

Kanaani added that the Islamic Republic is seeking the release of Iranians who “are imprisoned in the United States and have fallen victims to the American judicial system on the false charge of violating the oppressive and illegal sanctions imposed by the United States.”

The Iranian official also called on the US to start “removing obstacles” instead of performing “propaganda shows against Iran.”

Kazem Gharibabadi, the secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights, said recently that some 30 Iranians are jailed abroad, with charges related to US economic sanctions. About half of them are in the United States.

Meanwhile, at least 12 Iranian dual nationals and foreigners are held in Iranian prisons.EFE
