China says US action on TikTok violates principles of market economy

Beijing, March 28 (EFE).- China said Tuesday that the United States’ unfounded crackdown on theChinese video sharing platform Tiktok violated the principles of the market economy and fair competition and was an abuse of state power.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning claimed that American-style “hegemony” harmed not only American companies, but also their reputation and investor confidence.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently described Tiktok as “a threat” and the administration of President Joe Biden has threatened its parent company ByteDance with a ban if it does not sell its shares on the app.

The French government last week banned its officials from using TikTok on their office phones for security reasons.

Mao said Tuesday that China was opposed to the “abuse” of the concept of national security and that all countries ought to provide a fair and non-discriminatory trading environment for the normal investment and operation of foreign companies.

Critics have accused ByteDance of having ties to the Chinese Communist Party, although Tiktok denies such claims saying it does not censor content or give the Chinese government access to its data.

The White House recently gave its federal agencies 30 days to remove the social network Tiktok from all government electronic devices.

The European Commission and the European Union also banned their employees from using TikTok on official phones for security reasons, a move again criticized by Beijing. EFE
