At least 7 killed in Taliban operation against IS in Afghanistan

Kabul, Jan 4 (EFE).- At least seven alleged members of the Islamic State terror group were killed and nine others captured on Wednesday in a series of operations carried out by Taliban security forces in Afghanistan.

“Today an operation was carried out in the Qalacha and Shuhada-e-Salehin areas of Kabul city against the hideouts of Daesh (IS) members, Seven Daesh members were killed and 7 others were captured alive,” Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted.

“Similarly, 2 Daesh members were captured alive in Nimroz province (southeast),” he added.

The Taliban have intensified their operations against the IS in Afghanistan, after the latter carried out a series of attacks across the country in recent months.

The latest attack took place on Jan. 1, when an IS suicide bomber entered the military area of the Kabul airport and detonated himself, causing multiple casualties, even though the Taliban government has not released an official toll.

Last month the terror group also attacked a hotel frequented by Chinese citizens in Kabul, injuring 18 people, while all three attackers were killed.

Apart from these attacks, the Taliban blame the Afghan arm of the IS, called the IS-Khorasan Province, of a number of other bombings in different parts of the country.

In response to the attacks, Taliban security forces have already carried out a similar operation on Dec. 22, killing three alleged militants of the IS and arresting another.

Earlier, five other insurgents were killed in a Taliban raid in Kabul in mid-November. EFE
