Tottenham over Brighton, Arsenal drubs Man U, Newcastle downs Everton

Sports Desk, Nov 1 (efe-epa).- A goal by Gareth Bale on a pass from Spain’s Sergio Reguilon was what Tottenham needed for its 2-1 win over Brighton on Sunday, the victory elevating the team into the No. 2 spot in Britain’s Premier League, two points behind league leader Liverpool.

The joint work by the former Real Madrid teammates got Jose Mourinho’s squad out of a jam, where it looked like their efforts on the pitch would result in only a 1-1 draw against a rival who has won just one game and is teetering on the verge of relegation.

Bale was sent in by Mourinho in the 70th minute to replace Eric Lamela and needed just three minutes to head the ball into the net for the winning tally.

The London squad had gotten on the board first about 15 minutes into play thanks to a penalty kick after Adam Lallana fouled Harry Kane.

In the second half, however, it was Brighton’s Graham Potter who had tied it up.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fell 1-0 at home to Arsenal on a penalty kick goal by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The win leaves Man United in 15th position with just seven points in the rankings in six matches.

Arsenal played a great game throughout, thumping Man United at Old Trafford stadium, where it has not managed to win a single Premier League match so far this season The goal was Aubameyan’s second tally in Premier League action, helping the squad recover from two consecutive defeats and notching them up into eighth position with 12 points.

Newcastle produced an impressive display at home against a depleted Everton team that was missing creative forwards James Rodriguez and Richarlison.

After a drab first half that was short on quality, Callum Wilson opened the scoring shortly after the restart from the penalty spot.

Wilson had won the spot kick himself after nipping in front of Andre Gomes, who had swung a leg out to clear a corner from the near post but instead upended the England international.

The Magpies did not sit on the lead and continued to take the game to Everton, who went into the match in 2nd place.

Wilson doubled his tally in the 85th minute when he poked home at the back post following a cross from Ryan Fraser.

In Sunday’s early game, Southampton beat Aston Villa 3-4 in a goalfest that the Villains were close to leveling in injury time.

The Saints were 0-3 in the first half thanks to a goal by defender Jannik Vestergaard before James Ward Prowse scored a double.

Top scorer Danny Ings added a fourth, before Villa’s unlikely comeback attempt.

Tyrone Mings, England’s international center back, cut the deficit with less than 30 minutes left to play, but Villa’s response was too little, too late.

In the 93rd minute, Ollie Watkins took a penalty to make it 2-3 and Jack Grealish scored the 3-4 in the 96th minute.

Southampton, who have now won four of their last five, are in third place, only three points behind Liverpool in first, while Villa are in sixth place.
