Christian Brothers University, Delta State University, Freed-Hardeman University, University of Tennessee – Martin, Grand Canyon University, Le-Moyne Owen College, Relay, TeacherReady, University of Memphis y University of Phoenix.

ENGLISH:

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Shelby County Schools is looking for dozens of ESL and Spanish teachers for the 2018-2019 school year. Why? Because of the high demand of Hispanic students in the area.

Indeed, the Hispanic community is growing in Memphis and SCS understands how important it is for the students to relate to their teachers, especially if they both have the same culture and speak the same language.

So, to learn more about how to become a teacher and what the requirements are, La Prensa Latina conducted an exclusive interview with Sara Glaser, Talent Acquisition Analyst at Shelby County Schools.

ESL is a program that is constantly growing. SCS, for instance, had to add like seven new positions this year as their student body is getting more diverse. Right now, they have 7,000+ English language learners, and since they oversee 160 schools in the district (SCS is the largest school district in TN), there is always an opportunity to apply for a job as an ESL teacher. “We anticipate having 40 ESL positions and about 20 Spanish positions this year,” Glaser said.

When it comes to teaching, there’s two different ways that you can teach in Tennessee. “Either you can go to school to become a teacher, graduate and get certified, and then begin teaching, or you can go through something that is called Alternate Route Licensure process,” Glaser explained.

According to Glaser, an Alternate Route Licensure program allows you to teach in the classroom as you are working to get your certification. “You don’t have to quit your job, go back to school, and then graduate and then become a teacher. You can work on your certification at the same time as you’re still earning money as a teacher in the classroom. And it’s like any other teacher, you will have your own classroom and your own students.”

In order to qualify for the Alternate Route Licensure program, you will need three things: a bachelor’s degree, a 2.75 GPA or higher, and the ability to proof content mastery.

A content mastery can be proven in one of two ways: have a passing score on a TN praxis II (a universal test for teachers that is subject specific) in the content subject, or have a major in the subject area, like a major in English for instance. “If I wanted to teach Math, all I would have to do is take the Math praxis and I would be eligible to teach it,” said Glaser who has a bachelor’s degree in English.

If you have a BA degree from another country, you can have it evaluated at the Tennessee Department of Education.

Once you have these three requirements, you can interview with the school principals right away. If you are offered a position, your next step is to enroll in the Education Prep Program (EPP). SCS partners with ten EPPs that they have agreements with. These EPPs are:

Christian Brothers University, Delta State University, Freed-Hardeman University, University of Tennessee – Martin, Grand Canyon University, Le-Moyne Owen College, Relay, TeacherReady, University of Memphis, and the University of Phoenix.

However, it is important to note that these schools have different requirements when it comes to the praxis. You should contact SCS for more details.

“If we offered someone a position and they enrolled in their program, then the EPP would apply for a Job-Embedded Practitioners License on that candidate’s behalf. So, as long as the person is enrolled in this EPP and is working for us, they can operate under the Job-Embedded Practitioners License for the job-embedded part,” Glaser stated.

It takes three years to complete the Alternate Route Licensure program. Meanwhile, you will be making traditional teacher’s salary, which is around $43,000 a year, with all the benefits, including retirement options, summers off, etc. After you pass the program, you will be certified teacher and “nobody will ever know the difference.”

The candidate is responsible for paying their EPP. Some of the programs are available online.

Glaser also mentioned that another cool fact about being a SCS teacher is that they pay for performance. “We don’t reward arbitrarily for a master’s degree, we pay for performance. So, if you take good care of our kids, we will take good care of you.”

Furthermore, every year a teacher gets a TEM (Teacher Effectiveness Measure). Based on their score, which is from 1 to 5, they’ll be eligible for up to a $1500 increase on their salary.

SCS will be hiring up until the first day of the next school year.

“Our teaching population is reflective of our student body, so we want to make sure that teachers do reflect that, and we are working to expand our Latino representation in our teaching body,” Glaser concluded.
